Painful, itchy, and acne-like bumps on the eyelid may be symptoms of a stye.

Stye is caused by bacterial infection (Staphylococcus Aureus) in the eyelid area, causing inflammation and swelling of the red, acne-like bumps. It can cause pain, itching, and irritation of the eyelid area. It can heal on its own without treatment, but proper care can help the stye heal faster.

Causes of Stye

  • Contact with eyes with unclean hands
  • Wearing contact lenses without proper cleaning
  • Incomplete makeup removal and not cleaning properly
  • People with underlying diseases that reduce the body’s immunity, such as those with diabetes , etc.
  • People with chronic blepharitis

Symptoms of Stye

  • Pain, itching, or irritation around the eyelids
  • It feels like there is a foreign object in your eye.
  • There are red, swollen bumps, swollen eyelids, and red eyes.
  • There may be increased tearing or eye mucus.
  • In some cases, an abscess or pus may develop within 4-5 days.

Types of Stye

  • External hordeolum occurs on the outside edge of the eyelid. It is a swollen bump that becomes inflamed and develops into a pus-filled head. It often occurs in the hair follicles of the eye.
  • Internal hordeolum occurs on the inside of the eyelid, causing a swollen bump. It is caused by an infection of the meibomian glands. If the glands become blocked, they can form cysts or infected sacs.

Complications from stye

When a stye occurs, it may cause other symptoms, but they are usually not serious, such as:

  • Chalazionitis, which is characterized by a hard, raised bump that is not painful.
  • Inflammation of the eyelid tissue caused by infection and spread to the tissue around the eye, may cause the eyelid to become swollen, red, etc.

Stye treatment

  • Stye can heal on its own within 1-2 weeks without the need for treatment.
  • Apply a warm compress to the eye area for 5-10 minutes, 3-4 times a day. This will help drain the pus faster and reduce swelling.
  • If you have severe pain and eyelid swelling, you should see a doctor for treatment that includes antibiotics and drainage of the pus.
  • Avoid squeezing or popping the pustules yourself, as this can spread the infection and cause more inflammation.

Stye prevention

  • Wash your hands thoroughly. Before touching your eyes.
  • Cleanse your face of makeup thoroughly and do not leave makeup on for long periods of time.
  • Always maintain and clean your contact lenses.
  • Avoid exposure to dust and smoke by wearing glasses and a hat.
