Difference between hand foot and mouth disease and herpangina.

Both diseases are caused by the same group of viruses, but have different symptoms. Hand, foot and mouth disease will have a rash or blisters, low fever, and sores will be found on the hands, feet and mouth. Herpangina will only have sores in the mouth. Symptoms usually include a sudden high fever and a severe sore throat. Both diseases can heal on their own within 10 days, but should be monitored because there is a risk of complications such as dehydration , high fever for more than 3 days, meningitis, or if the mother is pregnant, it may cause the baby to be born prematurely.

Diagnosis of herpangina

Initially, the doctor will ask about the symptoms and perform a physical examination of the patient, especially around the mouth and throat to find the characteristics of the wound. If the doctor needs additional diagnosis, additional tests may be performed, such as urine tests, blood tests to find immunity to the infection, or collection of fluid samples from the nasal cavity, etc.

Treatment of herpangina

At present, there is no specific treatment for herpangina. You can only relieve symptoms such as:

  • Administration of antipyretic and pain reliever drugs such as paracetamol.
  • Avoid eating spicy foods as they can irritate mouth sores.

Prevention of herpangina

  • Eat a balanced diet with all five food groups.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap, both before eating and after using the toilet.
  • Avoid crowded places or places at risk of infection.
  • Clean containers and toys that the patient has touched with disinfectant.
  • Teach children to cover their mouth and nose every time they sneeze or cough to reduce the spread of germs.
  • Avoid contact and close contact with sick people.
  • Patients should be allowed to stop studying until they are fully recovered.
  • Exercise and get enough sleep.
